Mother of the groom comic strip episode 7 showing a mom learning to shift from planner to supporter during her son's wedding

MOG Comic Strip Episode 7: Somehow I’m Helpful and in the Way at the Same Time

Posted on July 2, 2026June 27, 2026 by joyfulmother

If you’ve ever sat across the room from your son’s wedding planning chaos and thought, I just want to help — but I have no idea when to speak up, Episode 7 of the Mother of the Groom Comic Strip was written for you. This one is about the quiet mental gymnastics we do before we say a single word.

The mother of the groom comic strip is back, and this episode hits a little differently. Because most of us have been right here. Helpful and in the way, somehow, at the exact same time.

Episode 7: Somehow I’m Helpful and in the Way at the Same Time

It starts the way it always does. You want to help. You have ideas. You have experience. You have opinions you are absolutely keeping to yourself, thankyouverymuch.

But the question hangs there anyway: Do I offer ideas? Or is that too much?

So you hold back. You overthink. You second-guess every instinct. Should you mention the timeline? Share that vendor recommendation? Or just stay out of it entirely?

UGH.

The Scroll That Changes Everything

Then you see a post in a wedding moms group. Another mom saying what you needed to hear: just because you have experience doesn’t mean they want your opinions. They need to do it their way.

She’s right. You know she’s right. And something in you finally lets go.

That’s the turning point. Not dramatic. Not a big conversation. Just a quiet internal shift from planner to supporter.

The New Job Description

The new list looks a little different than the one you would have written before the engagement.

  • Encourage
  • Listen
  • Cheer loud
  • Love big
  • Trust them

No vendor spreadsheets. No timeline reminders. No unsolicited input on the centerpieces. Just presence. Support. And an open text line when he needs it.

So instead of offering what you think they need, you ask what they want. One text: Hey sweetheart, is there anything I can do to help this week?

His reply: You always know what to say, Mom. Honestly, just keep being you. It means everything.

There it is.

A Front Row Seat to His Heart

You may not have a title on the seating chart. Your name probably isn’t in the vendor timeline. But you have a front row seat to his heart, and that is not nothing. That is everything.

The moments you show up for — the quiet ones, the ones no one photographs — those are the ones neither of you will forget.

This isn’t about control. It’s about trust. And it turns out, being trusted is the best role of all.

I raised him to build his own life. Now I get to cheer him on.

Why This One Resonates

The mother of the groom role doesn’t come with a manual. Most of us figure it out as we go, making adjustments in real time, trying to read the room without being told what the room needs.

That tension between wanting to help and knowing when to step back is real. It’s something a lot of MOGs carry quietly through the entire engagement season. And it doesn’t always get talked about directly.

That’s what this comic strip series is for. If you’re new here, start with Episode 1 and work your way through. Each episode picks up a different piece of what it actually feels like to be in this role.

You can also find more on navigating your role, managing expectations, and showing up well in the Complete MOG Wedding Planner — it covers everything from the engagement to the reception, including sections on relationships and communication.

For a broader look at how the mother of the groom role has evolved and what today’s wedding etiquette actually says about it, The Knot’s guide to the mother of the groom is a solid starting point.

What’s Next

A new episode is released every Thursday. These strips go up regularly, so if you want to make sure you don’t miss one, get on the email list. A recap is given every week.

And if Episode 7 hit close to home — share it with a MOG friend who needs to see it. Sometimes the best thing we can do for each other is say, hey, same.
